19-year-old Angela has been a Short Term Missionary (STM) at Family Retreats for four years in a row. Why the four-peat? “If you want to experience God in a whole new way – and see Him working through you all week – come to Family Retreat! It’s transformed my life completely,” says Angela. “I see God’s image in a different way and I see genuine, unconditional love here.” Angela spent an exciting and challenging week as a buddy to 10-year-old Jeremy, who has autism. Angela joins hundreds of people of all ages and professions who give a week of their summer and pay their own way for the privilege of serving a special needs family. Serving as an STM requires no special skill or background – just a willing and loving heart. Training is provided and the joy is free! It’s like Angela says… “Joni and Friends Family Retreats is my Disneyland! It’s the happiest place on earth!”

Angela blessed our family in immeasurable ways. Not only did she blow our minds with how much she enjoyed and loved our son as his STM at camp, months after the retreat, she drove 140 miles round trip just so she could serve again as Jeremy's 1:1 buddy at a local respite near our home. It had been a particularly painful week for me, facing rejection and feeling devalued by the world. But Angela's eagerness to come all that way, just to love on our son and our family for a handful of hours, was a powerful reminder of God's amazing love for us: After all, Jesus traveled the distance from Heaven to earth to demonstrate, "YES. YOU ARE WORTH IT!" Months after the glow of family retreat had passed, God's "Disneyland" made a house call, right when we needed it most. Hallelujah!
