Kayaking

When you’ve been in a wheelchair as long as I have, every summer that I can get out there and “do stuff” is pretty significant. Even though I'm past 65, I am still trying new things. Like when Ken and I went to our Joni and Friends’ Family Retreat in New England. It’s a beautiful camp, and on the edge of the property is a big lake. A couple of young men, who are expert kayakers, have a ministry they call Waypoint Adventure – they provide kayaking experiences to people with disabilities.  One of them approached Ken and suggested that I could get into one of the kayaks. “Joni?!” Ken said with a surprised look.  My husband knows how old and frail my quadriplegic bones are – Ken is very careful in transferring me in and out of my wheelchair because it wouldn’t take much for me to break a bone.

But when Ken saw the great care in the design of this kayak for safety and comfort, he began to scratch his chin and smile. “But you’ll have to ask Joni,” he said.  When they passed the idea by me, I jumped at the chance.  If Ken thought it would be safe, I knew it would be! So that afternoon I wheeled down by the lake, got my chair in position next to this big red kayak, and was carefully lifted into it.  For the next hour, Ken and I paddled out onto the beautiful, pristine lake.  It was so quiet and peaceful; all you could hear was the lapping of the oars.  For me and Ken, it was a first – an experience I'll never forget.

If you want some more inspiration, tune into the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. This week kayaking is the hot new sport. Remember life is an adventure to live, no matter what age you are. So go out there and, by the grace of God, try something new!

Joni, you are amazing. God has used you to help so many people, many of whom you won't meet til Heaven. I fractured the humerus in my dominant arm. Could not complain about getting 80% use back after PT, knowing you would love to have that amount. You have blessed and encouraged so many people, you have no idea. May God bless you and keep you. Someday you will run and leap in Heaven and your hands will be lifted to our King! Praying for you and Ken.

Wow! sounds like fun. I know several years ago now I went rafting with some friends and it was really really fun and everybody hurried to my side when I fell out of the canoe. I have a physical challenge since I was 5 and I have always had this saying that if there is a will there is a way. I found Jesus and got saved in 1989 and I am so so glad to have Him in my life. Yes, my life is an adventure. Thank you Jesus Amen!
