Josh WittJosh Witt, A Luke 14 Model

A few months ago, I shared with you our Luke 14 Mural. It’s a painting by Hyatt Moore that portrays the Parable of the Great Banquet in Luke chapter 14, where Jesus says, “Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them [the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame] to come in, so that my house will be full.” (If you haven’t had a chance to look at it, you must see this incredible video that shows how it was painted at our Global Access Conference). Well, today I want to tell you about one of the “models” for the Luke 14 mural: Josh Witt. Josh is a teenager who is full of joy and has great faith in Jesus — he also has Down syndrome. I first met Josh when he and a group of kids visited our International Disability Center to make Valentine’s Day cards for special needs families. I was so drawn by Josh’s enthusiasm to encourage other families with disabilities that I asked Josh’s mother if it would be possible for him to participate in this mural project. And I’m so delighted to hear back from his mom saying just how great of a blessing this experience was for Josh and others. Not only did this bolster Josh’s self-confidence, but it set his mom on fire for ministering to families like hers — and now, and their large church is starting a new special needs ministry so that God’s house will be made full! Josh’s influence goes beyond a painting, modeling to others that kids with special needs are an integral part of church and community.
