Paralympic Athlete Spotlight: Jarryd Wallace

By |Published On: September 8, 2016|Categories: Uncategorized|

Jarryd WallaceFollowing surgery complications that led to the amputation of his leg, Jarryd Wallace competed in the 2012 London Paralympics. He is returning this year to the 2016 Rio Paralympics to run for the United States, and we’re incredibly excited to watch him! Read along as he answers a few questions about the Paralympics and the role his faith has played in his journey:

What events will you compete in at the Paralympics?

The 100m dash and the 4x100m relay.

What has been your biggest challenge as you train and compete?

Not confusing my passion with my purpose. My passion is what I do, my purpose is who I am. Maintaining my focus on the Lord and not letting winning or losing define who I am is a great battle for all competitors. I have to constantly remember how I got to where I am and that my purpose is to be a light in the world and to love and serve others on the platform the Lord has given me.

When you get discouraged, what Bible verse encourages you?

1 Corinthians 9:27 (it is my mission) “I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others, I myself might be disqualified.”

What advice do you have for people who have a physical disability and also want to be physically active?

The only TRUE limits you have are the ones you put on yourself. Don’t ever stop dreaming. One dream could drastically change the direction of your life – it did for me.

What does a typical day of training look like for you?

Treatment from 9-10am. Track workout from 10:30am-12pm. Snack and Re-fuel. Weights from 1-2:30pm. Treatment if needed. Lunch. Recovery.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

The Rio Paralympic Games are the second most important event of 2016 for me. I am getting married to my best friend Lea Babcock on October 8.
