Heading to DC Today!

joni and ken leaving for the airportWe’re packing up our bags one more time and heading to Washington DC today for the William Wilberforce Weekend sponsored by the Colson Center. I’ll be speaking on several panels, as well as presenting messages on the sanctity of life, the Christian’s social responsibilities, and how Joni and Friends is promoting a biblical worldview on disability. The highlight will be when I receive the Wilberforce award on Saturday evening – what a privilege! Chuck Colson said, “Joni was selected for this award because — like William Wilberforce – she has persevered and sacrificed to fight social injustice and to transform culture. She is a defiant, inspirational, joy-filled rebuttal to those who would assault the sanctity of human life.” Wow, can you see why I feel so honored?

Even at this late hour, I am struggling – and fervently praying – about what to say in my 20 minute acceptance speech (and the two other times I’m speaking during the weekend). I so want to give honor to the Lord Jesus and to draw attention to the plight of the world’s one billion people with disabilities, 80% of whom live in developing nations. And in my heart, I’m sharing this award with the great team at Joni and Friends with whom I labor alongside – all of us are passionate about changing the landscape in the world of disability through the Gospel of our wonderful Savior! Please pray God will give me His words… pray for strength and rest and safety as we travel… and also, please pray that my wheelchair shows up in one piece and in working order! Thank you, friend!
