Cause 4 Life intern Beth

My name is Beth Massengale, and this summer, I am serving as an intern with Joni and Friends’ Cause 4 Life. As part of my internship, I had the privilege of being an STM (short-term missionary) at the Mission Springs Family Retreat, near Santa Cruz, California. I was curious about who I would be serving, but God had the perfect person in mind when He paired me with Sarah.

Sarah is a 31-year-old lady with several birth anomalies, which causes her to have slight developmental delay, shortened limbs, and some difficulty speaking. This was her 20th time attending Family Retreat, and she easily introduced me to everyone! Sarah doesn’t let her physical disabilities hinder her from using her spiritual gifts of encouragement and prayer. She does not give in to fear of what others might think of her. She joyfully approached people and eagerly asked how she could pray for them, and often would pray aloud right then and there. She even offered prayer for the camp pastor and worship leader. When Sarah prayed, it was like hearing one of the ‘saints of old’. She spoke straight to the heart of her Savior.

I was privileged to witness such pure worship from a saint like Sarah. She gave out countless hugs, smiles, and words of encouragement – the love and joy of Christ were on full display in her! I’ve never seen anything like it, and I couldn’t help but think of 1 John 4:18: “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out all fear.” Sarah’s love for Jesus and love for others far outweighed any fear of man. As a person with disabilities, I often struggle with fears of what others think of me. But the Lord was so faithful to give me Sarah’s example and godly influence! Praise His name, for one of the many lives Sarah touched at Retreat was my own.
