Great Outdoors Month

I have so many fond memories of camping. As a kid, I’d go beach camping with my family, including aunts, uncles, and cousins. My dad would set up a large army tent he got at Sunny’s Surplus Store. It was large enough to fit me, my three sisters, and all eight of our cousins. There was something wonderful about those warm, sunlit days and star-studded nights… singing hymns around the campfire and simply enjoying the great outdoors. I still treasure the nighttime sounds of the hissing gas lantern, and the soft voices of the adults gathered around a crackling fire.

I even took my love of camping into marriage! Ken and I would take our canvas tent up to the Sierras or to the beach. Can you believe it? At night, Ken would wheel me into the tent, lift me out of my chair and tuck me in a sleeping bag on the hard cot (I could do that when I was younger)!

I have long given up tent camping (now we consider renting a condo as camping!), but there is still something oh so wonderful about being out-of-doors. Perhaps it is because, as Romans 1:20 says, “Ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature” (NLT).

June is Great Outdoors Month, and what better time to enjoy God’s creation? If you’re enjoying the great outdoors this month, leave a comment telling me what you’re doing… tent camping optional!
