Gracious Words

BBQ chicken on toothpicksLast week at the mall, I wheeled past a woman offering food samples from a little tray – pieces of barbecued chicken on toothpicks. She said to me, “May I offer you one?” and held it up, at which point I directed my friend to take it and give me a bite. Immediately the woman apologized, “I am so sorry, I did not realize you were… I mean, I didn’t know you couldn’t use your hands.” She was horrified, but I told her not to worry. I just smiled and said, “Next time you see a person with a disability, just say, ‘Do you need any assistance? I’d be happy to help.'” She was so relieved and grateful that I had given her useful language for future encounters. As I wheeled away, I thought of Proverbs 16:21, “The wise in heart are called discerning, and pleasant words promote instruction.” Be ready with “pleasant words” today for those who need a nudge in the right direction!
