Finding Joy Through Trials

Joy to the World, the Lord has come! It’s a Christmas carol that I love to sing. But back in the early days of my quadriplegia? You would have never caught me singing such a jolly Christmas song. I wasn’t joyful — after all, I thought, who could be happy without the use of their hands or legs? And you know what, it’s something that many people new to disability experience. Take my friend, Shauna. She knew that trials were inevitable, but Shauna thought the “big, scary stuff” only happened to others — that is, until doctors told her that her baby would be born with Down syndrome.

Like me, Shauna questioned why, and soon she found herself drowning in the day-to-day strains of life with a disability. My friend wondered if she’d ever experience joy again. Perhaps you can relate. Maybe a disability, or breakup, or loss of income has you feeling down, like you just can’t bring yourself to smile or sing. If so, let me share Shauna’s brief video-testimony with you. In it, she shares how God’s Word helped lift her spirits. Oh friend, please do not let despair rob you of joy. Today, open God’s Word and be filled with encouragement — and then let us know how we can pray for you. Because even in the darkest hour, we are never alone. Remember, with Jesus, “the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).
