Elaine’s Story

Elaine and JoniMy friend Elaine has Parkinson’s disease — a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects your movement. Elaine’s hands often shake and sometimes she deals with joint stiffness, slurred speech, and loss of coordination. But even with these challenging symptoms, Elaine focuses on what she can do. She takes an adaptive dance class, is part of a choir, and volunteers at Joni and Friends — this woman keeps herself active physically and mentally. Elaine says, “I may be the woman who walks and talks funny, but I can sing, dance, and I can help others.” Not only does this keep depression at bay for Elaine, but it also helps ease her symptoms.
