Earning Your Advanced Degree

Graduation

Next month my nephew, Cody, is graduating from high school. I can hardly believe he’s virtually a young adult – time sure does go by fast. But Cody has worked hard and his efforts have paid off. All those late-night study sessions and endless essays; all his time and energy is earning not just a high school diploma, but an open path to a bachelor’s or even a master’s degree. It’s a little like our Christian life — our hardships are earning for us advanced degrees in spiritual benefits. It is no overstatement to say that the highest degrees in the Christian life are earned in the school of suffering.

When we cling to God in our suffering—continuing to trust His goodness—it showcases His sustaining grace. It also shows that we think He is definitely worth the struggle. Most of all, it authenticates our desire to be like Jesus. So friend, keep working toward your advanced spiritual degree described in II Corinthians 4:17, “For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!” I think Cody would agree that the outcome is worth the work!
