Airport MiracleAirports may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of miracles, but it's the perfect place for God to reveal Himself. It's why on busy ministry trips, Ken and I always keep our eyes open for divine 'appointments.' One of those miracle-appointments recently occurred at the Newark airport. We were happy to be heading home after a fruitful time on the East Coast, and our United gate agent, Alice, was checking us in for our flight to LAX. As we engaged her in conversation, we learned that her family in Puerto Rico had suffered much since Hurricane Maria. Near tears, Alice explained that her brother, Carlito...

Fall’s Arrived

Fall’s ArrivedDuring a recent trip back east, I was so hoping to see a little Fall color – but as we drove from Maryland to New York, hardly an oak or a maple tree was turning yellow or orange. We were too early for the change of leaves. When we flew home to Los Angeles, I was hoping to feel the cooler temperatures of Fall, but it wasn’t to be — it was 90 degrees, just as when we left. When Ken and I pulled up into our driveway, gathered our things, and proceeded up the front walk, I glanced at our myrtle tree in the front yard — but even its leaves were still green. However, I dropped everything when we reached our front porch...

Beauty MarksEvery woman bears a scar of some sort, and often it is a source of quiet shame and disappointment. My friend, Linda Barrick, understands this — her life was completely altered on the night of November 5, 2006 when her family’s van was hit by a drunk driver speeding at 80mph. Their van was destroyed, and all four members of...

Prayer in the Face of EvilOur country has suffered, yet again, an act of pure evil and civil unrest – and as Christians, we are dropping to our knees, asking for God's mercy, healing, and grace. This morning I woke up to the news that at least 58 people were killed, and over 550 were wounded in a horrific shooting in Las Vegas. A gunman turned a concert into...

Great MemoriesAlthough summer is behind us, I am still relishing in so many memories from Family Retreats, and how the Word of God worked in the hearts of so many disabled kids and adults. Each reflection blesses my heart – like the mother I met who never got out of the house due to her autistic son’s frequent meltdowns. Family Retreat was...

Rude Interruptions

Rude Interruptions The other night I was awakened by searing pain in my hip… again. Having already awakened Ken three times, and not wanting to disturb him again, I lay in bed, frustrated and on the verge of discouragement. I desperately needed sleep – there was so much on my ‘to do’ list for the next day. I kept thinking, if only this pain...

A New Team MemberTracey is a gifted young woman who we recently welcomed on board as an administrative assistant in our Response Department. Our Joni and Friends coworkers have noticed a few similarities between Tracey and me – she has a winning attitude, is a wheelchair-user, and she's happily married to a Japanese-American. Mike...

Rachel’s GiftWhenever I travel, I can always expect a few “divine appointments.” During my recent trip to Indiana, I met Rachel, a 38-year-old woman who has cerebral palsy. Ever since she read the Joni book as a little girl, Rachel has been a faithful supporter of Joni and Friends. She loves our Wheels for the World outreach, and always dreamed of being able to provide a wheelchair to a child in need – but the chances of that seemed unlikely. Although she gives monthly what little she can, Rachel lives with her parents and finances are tight; she depends on SS Disability...

Hurricane Response UpdateHats off to Joni and Friends Texas and Wheels for the World who partnered together to provide more than 1,000 mobility devices and Beyond Suffering Bibles to children and adults with disability who lost their wheelchairs in Hurricane Harvey. Mary Grace Rushing is pictured here with Houston's Mayor Turner who came to help with the wheelchair distribution. Pictured also is Carlos, a young boy who certainly was happy to receive a new set of wheels after he lost his pediatric wheelchair in the rescue. Mary Grace wrote, "It was a great privilege to serve the Lord during my days in Houston and Beaumont in the last...
