Earlier today I read Doug Mazza's post from Haiti (check it out on the Joni and Friends blog). I groaned, thinking of so much suffering! Yet Haitians – especially Christians -- possess amazing resilience. The joy of the Lord among Haitian believers puts me to shame. It reminds me of the disabled people I met in Africa when we were there giving wheelchairs and Bibles. A disabled boy who lived in a box by a trash heap said, “God has blessed people in your country so much, why are so many unhappy?” Another said, “Welcome to our country where our God is bigger.” I heard it time and again: “We have to trust God. He is our only hope.”

I'm always inspired when I read your posts… sometimes, however, I'm challenged. Like the comment someone posted on our radio page – it was about her Christian friend who died after a long, painful battle against cancer. "Please explain to me why a good God would allow such a godly Christian woman to suffer so needlessly. It doesn’t seem fair," she wrote. I sat for a long minute just staring at her question. My heart went out to this woman (not to mention her dying friend!); after all, her question was honest. Sometimes, though, we act as if there were some imaginary court in the sky where God must answer to something called “fairness.” What we forget is that God Himself is the court; He invented fairness. What could we possibly measure His fairness against?

Here’s hoping you’re spreading the love of God to those you treasure! Speaking of love-sharing, I was reading my blog over the weekend, and it got me thinking about heaven – oh, what a glorious time we’ll enjoy, hearing each other’s stories and learning how God did-this-and-that. So, yes, TJ, I really do read your posts; and, yes, Alison please tell your friend in Australia I’d love to hear from her; and, wow, Angela, I’m loving that you’re “getting it” -- I’m going to share your post on an upcoming "Joni and Friends" radio program.

The night before last, I was emotionally-crumbling from the day's pain, and so I quick called my fellow quad, Vicky Olivas. Ours is a wonderful "I help you when you're weak, and you help me when you're strong" friendship. Vicky's incredible Christian character has been stretched and strengthened through adversity (watch her episode on our TV page or visit her blog at http://vickyo55.blogspot.com/). Earlier this week, she was the one who had called me, worn-out, weary, and just plain tired of her disability. So when I telephoned her the other night, I knew I'd find an empathetic ear – together we were able to coax ironfisted faith out of our feeble hearts and point each other to the Word….

A Little Lesson from Ephesians...

As Ken drove me to Joni and Friends this morning, our van became a sanctuary of praise-full song – “We’re Marching to Zion” was the hymn on my heart, and I sang it vigorously! I have to on days like this… days when my hip and lower back cramp in pain. It's my way of chasing away any dark, discouraging spirit bent on 'taking me out of the battle.' A difficult day like this is also a chance to 'testify' to the spirit world that, come hell or high water, I choose to cleave to the cross, hang onto the Spirit, and grab hold of the grace of my Savior.

Earlier today, a visitor asked me, “Are you a type A personality?” I can’t remember exactly what that means, but I know I love the mission God's given me, and I'm invigorated by the work. I'm not so ‘into’ work, though, that I don’t carve out lots of time to just enjoy God's blessings. Like the recent PET scan report.  I'm still overflowing with joy; still celebrating in the style of Psalm 68:3, “But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful.”

Joni Eareckson Tada and Rainey Floreen in the radio studioIf you're looking for a woman who works hard, and keeps a chipper attitude through thick-or-thin, then you need to meet my friend and coworker, Lorraine Floreen (or Rainey as we affectionately call her around Joni and Friends). She came on board with JAF over seven years ago to head up our Joni and Friends' radio ministry, and has been doing a great job expanding our radio outreach into new broadcasting formats, as well as into different languages (like Chinese)!

Love your posts! It's why you need to see how we celebrated the results of my PET scan yesterday - you see, every morning for the past couple of months, I've been wheeling by 36 little pink ducks on top of the file cabinet outside my office (placed there by Cheri, our Marketing Director). Some mornings they're arranged in a cute figure-eight; other times, all in a row; and occasionally, like they're square dancing...

Joni and Ken looking at each other
Ken and I just received word that the results of the PET scan I underwent last week are clear! Actually, what my doctor said was “No evidence of metastasized cancer… that’s great news!” Thank you for praying – I thought of your intercessions last week as Ken lifted me up onto the imaging table and I went into that big “tube.” Now that we have this good report, we’ll be able to better plan my ministry activity for the rest of the year. God is gracious and merciful for “He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouting” (Job 8:21). Thanks for rejoicing with us!
