Picture of Ken TadaMy husband Ken has always been an inspiration to me, but during the last month or so, my love and respect for him as skyrocketed – as you know, I recently had surgery for breast cancer and am currently undergoing treatment. NEVER has there been a more helpful, considerate, caring husband than Ken! He ought to be awarded a honorary degree in nursing. We both agree that this battle against cancer has drawn us even closer together. For all that he has invested in my struggle against cancer? He gets voted tops in my book for “Most Inspiring People!”

I think about Ephesians 3:10 a lot these days -- like this past weekend when I was alone in the backyard with the breeze and birds... "It's now God's purpose that, through the church, his manifold wisdom should be made known to the powers and principalities in the heavenly realms." Translation? With this cancer, my life is on display...

There's nothing like a little hymn-harmonizing with visitors to make one's spirits soar -- that's what happened when several JAF friends popped by to drop off flowers and food. Before I knew it, we were belting out "In Christ alone, my hope is found; he is my rock, my strength, my song!"

Although today, July 8, marks the date my sister Kathy had originally arranged to fly back to Maryland, she's graciously offered to stay another two weeks -- hooray! The last 10 days have been such a blessing as Kathy has helped with my medical needs, assisted with meals and house chores, and given Ken much-needed breaks (he says she's been a God-send). We've enjoyed many cozy moments...

I enjoyed a heartwarming visit from my quadriplegic friend, Vicky Olivas, who underwent surgery for cancer several years ago. Just seeing her sitting in her wheelchair with her bright smile and happy spirit was such an encouragement – my friend is a true example that although “outwardly we may be wasting away, inwardly we are being renewed day-by-day.”

The precious hours I was strong enough to sit up over the holiday weekend were almost all spent in our backyard, enjoying the breezes and blue sky. Ice packs, helping me drink lots of water, and keeping my arm elevated were Kathy’s responsibility, while Ken helped set up the portable keyboard that our friends, the Sanders, brought along for their Sunday visit (Al, Margaret, Peg and Jim head up Ambassador Agency, producers of the "Joni and Friends" radio program for nearly 30 years). After a scrumptious picnic lunch, it was an afternoon of singing hymns and celebrating the grace and sovereignty of God. Want to sing along? Today was my first real day of feeling like myself – four days after pretty serious surgery :-). And just to prove it, I posted a quick video of me and my sister. Ken and I are so grateful for Kathy’s help this week...

With her hospital stay behind her, Joni is taking the next several weeks to rest and recuperate from surgery. Today Joni and Ken met with a home health nurse to go over the details of tending to her surgical site. Her sister Kathy has flown in from Maryland to help with home nursing needs. “It’s great having my sister here,” Joni said. “My mother survived breast cancer and Kathy was her primary care giver after Mom’s mastectomy. I’m in good hands with her here.” An appointment with her medical oncologist has been scheduled for next week...

More than 36 hours have passed since Joni’s surgery and she continues to make great improvement. Today Joni is preparing to leave the hospital and plans to be at home in her own bed by this evening. “I’ve been so blessed reading the many cards and emails and the blog posts on Joni’s Corner. Ken and I are absorbing as much information as we can...

A special note to Friends and Family:

Joni is resting in the recovery room with Ken after a successful procedure - Praise God! The initial doctor's reports indicate that it appears that some lymph nodes were affected by the cancer and Joni will need chemotherapy to follow up this surgery. So let's give praise to our loving God for bringing Joni and Ken through this and asking him to give them yet more grace and peace for the next steps.
