The Sanders

Last month while recording "Joni and Friends" radio programs, we celebrated two big milestones: 35 Years of Radio and the 90th birthday of my good friend, Al Sanders. We went into the studio early to record a mix of programs, then enjoyed a celebration lunch (including a Baskin-Robbins chocolate chip ice cream cake...

Gumji-Im SistersI first met Eunice Im and her sister, Keren, many years ago at a Joni and Friends Family Retreat. Keren had autism and, back then, Eunice really didn't view her sister as a friend. Keren was just, well… a sister with a disability. But while serving as a volunteer at Retreat, Eunice fell in love with some of the young people who had autism—she had so much fun with them that week! Which made her wonder, "why can't my relationship with Keren be the same?!"

That was well over a decade ago, and now? Eunice and her sister, Keren, are not...

Summer Days

Today officially kicks off the summer season, and I just bet you're recalling lazy family vacations at the beach with plenty of ice cream! I remember well this day at the shore in Ocean City, Maryland (that's 12-year-old me in the middle with the towel-wrap, surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins). Earlier that day I was out...

Joni and her dadFather’s Day always makes me reflect on how grateful I am for my dad, especially for the way he handled pain. When I was growing up, I always knew my father suffered from very bad arthritis (he often injured his joints in his early wrestling days). Rarely would I see him grimace, but if he did, it was only for an instant, then he’d continue with his trademark smile. As a proud daughter, I loved his attitude. But after I broke my neck...

Pray

Pain is hard. It’s relentless and it wears you down. And that can lead to anxiety: "What if it gets worse? It already feels unbearable. How will I manage?" Living with chronic pain as I do, I know that our adversary, the devil, delights in using anxious feelings to rob us of joy, ruin our contentment, and divert our focus from...

CelesteAs you may know, I love talking about my fellow volunteer-turned-employee, Celeste. It’s probably because of her joyful spirit -- every time I see this young lady, she’s smiling. A few weeks back, Celeste shared the secret behind her happy spirit. She lives by five principles her mother taught her (they’ve been especially helpful as she deals with cerebral palsy). Each principle is simple, yet profound, and I just had to pass them along to you. Here’s what Celeste told me:

“First, my mom taught me that we all have a disability; mine just happens to be one you...
