Heart for the DisabledMid-winter can be awfully dreary when you have a disability – just getting out and about is a challenge. It’s why every year, Joni and Friends celebrates Valentine’s Day in a most unusual way. We call it Heart for the Disabled...

WinstonWhenever I travel, I ask my friends to pray for folks that we often meet along the way. In October, I took a trip to Tennessee for some speaking engagements.  Well, you can’t go to the south without eating at a Cracker Barrel, and while there, Winston an 87-year-old widower who survived the Korean War, sat down at the table next to us...

Mission ConneXion ConferenceThis week I’m heading to Oregon to speak at the Mission ConneXion conference; the topic is Who Is Able? Mission ConneXion believes, as I do, that we are ALL able to preach the Gospel. But sometimes we’re just not sure how to go about it. And so, whether you need help reaching your neighbors, family members...

Family RetreatIt’s not often Celeste isn’t smiling. The joy of the Lord that she exudes spills over onto everyone who meets her. Having cerebral palsy might slow Celeste’s stride, but it certainly doesn’t stop her from serving. Several days a week she volunteers at Joni and Friends, and last summer she also served as an STM at our Murrieta Family Retreat...

Radio Recording DaySometimes while recording radio programs, my friend Rainey ‘helps’ my diaphragm by squeezing me around the middle so I can breathe better. It is especially helpful when I am singing. As I think about it, I’m amazed at how many things need to fall into place to assure a successful radio recording day...

The Sparkle EffectMaking friends in high school is not always easy but getting involved in school programs can help. When Sarah noticed that her classmates with disabilities were being excluded from school activities, she invited them to join her cheer squad. At first, Sarah had no idea how the football fans would react to the inclusive cheer team...

SnickersI never know who will be tuning into my radio program - like the other day when I was telling listeners about a busy afternoon at work. I was jamming to get things done and hadn’t taken a break all day (I was in front of my computer for three hours straight). When I did take a minute to go to the restroom, I came back to my desk and there, in front of the computer, was a bite-size Snicker bar (one of my favorites). The yummy treat was sitting on top of a little note that read, “The Lord your God is your strength and shield.”...
