volunteers assembling packages at joni and friendsThe other morning as I was getting out of the elevator to head to my office, I found our library filled with volunteers. "What's up?" I asked. They told me, "We're putting together 'We Care' packages!" I was so proud to observe their work! You see, February can be a difficult time for special-needs families (the cold, snowy days make it difficult for wheelchair-users to get out of the house, and discouragement can settle like a fog). Well, Joni and Friends teams across the US sent us the names and addresses of 350 desperately weary families. And so our volunteers – even the young ones – are putting together 'We Care' packages to mail to each family. Each includes books, music CDs, gifts, and an audio message from Ken and me. It's all mailed with love, as well as the sentiment of...

hisayasu familyWhen a young mother learns that the child she is carrying may well be born with disabilities, there is shock and dismay. But when I read Bekah's response on her blog (after she saw the ominous sonogram of her unborn little boy), I was so encouraged, I had to pass it on (Bekah is the daughter of Rainey, our communications manager). So take a moment and listen to my radio program today – and share it with a friend you know who's bearing a child. I promise, her story is a blessing!

joni in her recording studioAnd, as always, I'll be relying on your prayers. Honestly, sometimes when I pull up to the microphone, I wonder where I'm going to find the breath (my quadriplegic lungs aren't the best). But we always pray earnestly before things get started; then, invariably, God shows up! It'll be a nonstop, busy day with one short break, so please ask God to give His robust and vigorous grace. And the hymn I'm singing...

From the Radio Studio...

joni in the radio studioOh, how amazed I am at the way God uses your prayers. Like early this morning when I entered the recording studio – I wondered where I'd find the energy for the day, but the Spirit of Jesus gave grace-after-grace as each hour went by (it's now 4:00 pm and we just finished). What a marathon! Thank you for partnering with me today through your intercessions. As my words were recorded, I kept thinking how each of us (through our own words) have a chance every day to nudge people either closer to Christ, or away from him. We are either 'talking up' Jesus, or 'talking him down.' Proverbs 18:21 says, "The tongue has the power of life and death." Today, let's agree to offer words that encourage, inspire, and bring… Life!

Many of you will recall the story I posted about my quadriplegic friend, Sungchil Park – although she often has to stay in bed healing pressure sores, Sungchil wisely uses her time to memorize Scripture. To date, she has memorized 4000 verses from the Word of God, most of them from the Book of Psalms! Sungchil and her husband Moses were overwhelmed by your response to their story – God bless each and every one...

joni and kenA very special thanks to all of you who have been emailing me, posting on Facebook, and commenting on my blog – all in response to Ken’s and my appearance on “The Doctors,” the popular CBS mid-afternoon show. Ken and I were so honored to receive those awards, and your ‘congratulations’ comments really top it off. Most of all, we were thrilled that the TV program showed how Ken and I want to keep ‘passing on the blessing’ to other special needs families through our outreach at Joni and Friends. After all, when God blesses us, the best thing to do is share that blessing with someone in greater need! To God be the glory!

ken kissing joni on the cheekRecently Ken and I went to CBS Studios in Los Angeles to be interviewed on "The Doctors," the popular mid-afternoon CBS television show that showcases various health issues. Our program, however, awarded people with some pretty amazing stories (it was quite inspirational). What award did Ken and I receive? Tune in February 21 to your CBS station (check your local listings for the time :-).

It's surprising how many marriages are beginning to crack under the pressure of suffering, depression, illness and pain. It's why Ken and I just wrote our new book Joni & Ken: An Untold Love Story. After more than 30 years of marriage, we're peeling back the curtain to reveal some of the toughest years of our life together. Yes, it is definitely an untold story… but we hope the lessons learned through our depression, pain, and cancer will bolster others to 'stick with their vows, for better or for worse.' Joni & Ken: An Untold Love Story will be out soon, but you can get a sneak preview now by watching this video – then please, share it with your friends!

When Sara called to say thank you for her "Heart for the Disabled" package, she could hardly speak. She was so overwhelmed when she opened her big box of love from Joni and Friends – it arrived on a day when she was feeling particularly low, thinking, Does anyone even know or care what I'm going through? But oh, was Sara...

On February 14, five big "Heart for the Disabled" boxes filled with letters, gift cards, drawings, stuffed animals, poems and copies of hymns arrived at the homes of five special-needs families – and, boy, were they surprised! Eddie and Diane Kim spread all the Christian encouragement out on the living room rug and their two little boys with autism had a blast relishing in the notes written just for them. Justin Kim said, "Joni and Friends loves...
