Joni and Ken reading the e-devotionalNow's the perfect time of year to approach God's Word in a fresh, new way – and it's why I encourage you to sign up today for my daily e-devotionals in 2014! Each day I will email you a new devotional in which I explain a favorite Bible passage, share a story, give a personal challenge, and close with a prayer. It's a great way for us to spend time together in the Bible as we head into January. So begin this year anew, friend; after all, Philippians 3:13-14 says, "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." Together, let's get into God's Word and press on into 2014. Don't forget to sign up today, and tell a friend :-). Looking forward to spending time with you and… Happy New Year!

People Who Inspire Joni: Paige Benton-Brown

Paige-BrownPeople often ask, “Who do you like to read, Joni? Who do you like to listen to?” I often point to the essays and messages given by my friend, Paige Benton Brown. Paige and I are members of the Presbyterian Church of America; I first met her at a PCA conference in the 1990s. With a master’s degree from Covenant Theological Seminary, Paige is a deep thinker… she loves God and His Word, and when she recommends a book, I read it. She’s a favorite speaker on the GospelCoalition.org platform, and never ceases to amaze me with her fresh insights into familiar biblical passages. If you have time, be blessed by her message, “In the Temple:  The Glorious and Forgiving God” which she presented at the 2013 Gospel Coalition National Women’s Conference – she talks fast (and a little long), but I know you’ll be richly rewarded!

Kathy's Bible and reading scheduleKathy's reading schedule
My sister Kathy has been visiting us this holiday season and we've been enjoying reading the Bible together – she signed up to read the Word of God with us through the year, and now finally, we're in the Book of Revelation (and soon to start over in Genesis come January 1 :-). When she showed me the notes she scribbled on her 'reading plan,' I was amazed! And, yes, that's her Bible with all those tabs (I don't know how she tells them apart :-). Kathy will be joining Ken and me in reading through the Bible again in 2014, and we invite you to please join us (download your chronological...

Christmas decorations on tableChristmas Day may be well behind us, but the joy of celebrating our wonderful Savior's birth remains as fresh as ever – in fact, my eyes were wet during earlier this week as we sang Christmas carols at our church service by candlelight. Like you, I say, "Thank you, Lord Jesus, for entering our dark and broken world to rescue us from sin and the tyranny of Satan… May my life in 2014 be a true reflection of how I treasure the sacrifice you made in coming to earth!" And that's a great prayer for you, too! Enjoy the rest of this blessed holiday, friend!

A Family Christmas

Kathy, Joni and Ken by the Christmas treeLast week Kathy flew in from Maryland to spend Christmas with Ken and me – it's been a glorious week enjoying long, sweet sisterly talks about childhood days on the farm. The older we get, the more we appreciate the warmth and wonder of 'family.' God places us in our particular families so that we might learn how to get along with one another; how to show mercy and forgiveness; to learn to care when we're hurting; to learn how to resolve conflicts, and to learn how to love, warts and all.… sort of like the way God loves us :-). I pray that this Christmas week you, too, will enjoy wonderful family moments. Families are that special in God's eyes; after all, Isaiah 58:6 says "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:… to not turn away from your own flesh and blood?" Great advice! Have a blessed day-after-Christmas :-).

Ken and Joni near Christmas TreeI’ve been wondering why I’ve been singing so many Christmas carols this season – and this morning I discovered why! I was reading in the Gospel of Luke, and the first two chapters record six different times when people burst into worshipful song at the news of Christ’s birth - from Mary to Simeon to the heavenly hosts that night in the skies above Bethlehem, all of them could not contain their joy! And it’s the same with Ken and me – we sing “Joy to the World” along with you this glorious Advent, and may the peace and joy of Christ fill your heart to overflowing this Christmas!

Christmas Greetings from Prison

megan and joni I have a special affection for the inmates who refurbish our wheelchairs for Wheels for the World. And this week I received a special Christmas greeting from the men at the Arizona State Penitentiary (recently I sent them my books for their prison library). Not all of these inmates know Jesus, but our Wheels shop supervisor is praying and sharing the Gospel with them. How important is our Wheels ministry in prisons? Ephesians 4:28 says, "He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need." Truly, the prisoners at Arizona State Penitentiary, along with more than 200 other inmates in other US prisons, are "doing something useful" with their hands "to share with those in need." Cheer on their work by praying for and giving a Christmas gift to Wheels for the World in their honor!

James and Joni talking at the IDCThe other day I stopped James René in our IDC hallway to ask him for an update on our Cause 4 Life internship opportunities for 2014 (James is director of the program). As he described the overwhelming needs overseas among disabled children and adults, my heart broke – oh, may God raise up workers because the fields are ready for harvest! If you are a student who is interested in disability and missions, I urge you to serve as an intern with Joni and Friends in 2014. Our schedule of US-based internships, as well as overseas opportunities, is now posted. Take a look and pray about joining us in the New Year!

Joni with the Wheel for the Worlds' new wheelchair prototypeOur team in Wheels for the World is constantly thinking of ways we can improve on the wheelchairs we take to disabled children overseas. And when they showed me this proto-type of our new pediatric-wheelchair design, I got so excited. It has the ability to recline, as well as to tilt-in-space. It also has the capability of 'growing' with a disabled child – the foot pedals can extend, and the back support can be raised. Oh, what a precious gift this will be to disabled children and their families and desperately poor countries! Our Wheels department is working with prisons where inmates will eventually assemble these special little wheelchairs. So this Christmas, please join Ken and me by giving a gift to our wheelchair outreach; after all, "Whoever is kind to the needy honors God" (Proverbs 14:31).
