joni and ken in the radio studioStarting bright and early Monday morning, I'll be in the studio recording 30 "Joni and Friends" radio programs, 20 one minute radio features, and 30 disabilitycampaign.org features (didn't I just ask you to pray about all this a couple of weeks ago? My, radio recording day certainly comes around quickly. :-). I will wheel into the studio relying on your prayers to God to give me energy, a clear voice, and most of...

joni and ken and their radio team in the radio studioI just finished radio recording and wanted to send you this quick snapshot – because we paused to thank God for friends like you. I know for a fact that many of you take very seriously your partnership in prayer (you tell me so on the blog). And I'm convinced that your intercessions kept my messages fresh today, my energy up, my breathing strong, pain levels down, and my heart happy (as well as the hearts of Ken, Bev, Rainey, Jim my producer, and Tatiana). What’s next? Tuesday May 1 begins a very exciting month for radio – we are celebrating 30 years on the air. Glory to God! And thank you for listening and praying :-).

joni and docents
These wonderful women serve as 'tour guides' for visitors to the IDC from out-of-state, from local churches, homeschool groups or Christian schools (this photo was snapped after our Docent Appreciation Luncheon last week). Our trained docents lead folks through our headquarters and do an excellent job of raising disability awareness, and explaining everything from Family Retreats, the Christian Institute on Disability, to Wheels for the World. I love it when they bring groups into my office where I have a chance to share my excitement about reaching for Christ the world's 1 billion people with disabilities. Then, it's on to my art studio for a few art lessons (and a box of Crayola crayons for any kid 12 and under :-). Do you plan to be in Southern California on business or vacation? Then call our office and schedule a tour through the IDC with us – I promise, you'll be inspired.

A Tribute to our Friend, Chuck Colson

Several weeks ago Ken and I were with Chuck and our friends for the Wilberforce Weekend – on Friday evening, Chuck got up to the platform to welcome everyone and express his excitement about presenting the Wilberforce Award to me on the following evening. It was not to happen. He was overcome by dizziness and unable to finish his speech. The Joni and Friends team were there on Saturday evening to film the award presentation – the best part, though, was praying for Chuck and leading the group in a heartwarming hymn. I hope you enjoy this special video tribute…

Like you, our hearts are so heavy, hearing the news that Chuck Colson has left us for Home and, of course, we pray for his wife Patty and the family. There will be other prophetic voices that will now rise up to call our nation back to moral absolutes, but none will have the authority and gravitas of our friend, Chuck.

I first met this remarkable man in 1976 when Zondervan published both Joni and his book Born Again. My story was about finding freedom through the confinement of my wheelchair; Chuck’s was about finding freedom in Christ after his confinement in prison. Our connection between...

chuck colson and joniThis morning when I arrived at work, I received an update from Jim Liske, CEO of Prison Fellowship Ministries, on the condition of Chuck Colson. He wrote, "It is with a heavy, but hopeful heart that I share with you that it appears our friend, brother, and founder will soon be home with the Lord. Chuck's condition took a decided turn yesterday." May I ask you to join Ken and me and all of us here at Joni and Friends in praying that God, even at this late date, will miraculously restore Chuck to full health? What a treasure this man is in the kingdom; his is the voice of a prophet to our society, constantly calling the people of this nation to repentance, to safeguarding the sanctity of life, religious liberties, and the institution of...

Your Prayers Needed for China

Zhang Xu is my quadriplegic friend whose ministry, Bethesda Rehab, is an affiliate of Joni and Friends. Xu and his team are bending over backward to alleviate the plight of many disabled people in his region of China. In his recent newsletter he wrote, "For a long time, I have been puzzled by the questions: Who will take care of those disabled friends once their elderly parents pass away? Each time I saw Liu’s old mother kneel down on the bed, fumbling to change a catheter for her quadriplegic son, I feel totally heartbroken. The mother of nearly seventy years old is the only caregiver of the son with her poor eyesight and deteriorated health." Zhang Xu poignantly describes the desperate plight of many severely disabled people in less-developed parts of the world. Joni and Friends is proud to be associated with the work of Dr. Zhang Xu – please pray that God will continue to resource his work with more Christian volunteers, funds, and more churches to come alongside his ministry!

joni at microphone in radio studioOn Monday, April 16, Ken and I will be on Focus on the Family speaking about “Dealing with a Disability in Marriage.” If you know of a couple struggling with challenges in their marriage, encourage them to listen in – Ken shares some heartwarming insights, especially for men (insights that will inspire couples, no matter what trials they're facing). If you miss it, the audio of this broadcast will appear on Focus on the Family's...

An Old-Fashioned Hymn Sing

On Wednesday morning of this week, Ken and I helped lead the Spring Sing at EV Free Fullerton Church – more than an hour of harmonizing on some of the best hymns of the faith. Our good friend (and former co-host for the "Joni and Friends" radio program), Al Sanders, helped pull the whole thing together. People from other congregations attended; after the hymn sing, one pastor wrote, "We had a young lady in our group who is going through some rough times with medical issue that are causing some serious disabilities in her life. She came away with new assurance that God is in control and that what she is going though will bring honor to Him." That's how 'healing' the words to these hymns can be! And here's one that touched me so deeply that morning...

Remembering Mother

joni and her motherToday, April 12, marks the birthday of my mother, Lindy Eareckson (if she were still with us, she'd be 98). Her warmth and good cheer sustained me through many a difficult day when I was first injured and learning how to adjust to a wheelchair. Tireless and unflappable, Mother always had an encouraging word. Yesterday, a dear friend sent me this quote by Rachael Billington which reminded me of Mom, "Motherly love is not much use if it expresses itself only as a warm gush of emotion, delicately tinged with pink. It must also be strong, guiding and unselfish. The sweetly sung lullaby; the cool hand on the fevered brow, the Mother's Day smiles and flowers are only a small part of the picture. True mothers have to be made of steel to withstand the difficulties that are sure to beset their children." Isn't THAT the truth! I'm looking forward to introducing you to dear Lindy on the other side of eternity! Oh, by the way, the photo is from 1991 :-)… Can't you tell from the hairstyle?!
