chuck colson and joniToday, Friday, I spent all day with a wonderful group of 40 Christian leaders from across the country, all of us fully committed to shaping a biblical worldview as it concerns the sanctity of life, religious liberty and the institution of marriage. Chuck Colson and our friends from the Colson Center on Worldview convened this meeting to see how our organizations and churches can work better together -- of course, "sanctity of life" and disability intersect in a powerful way when you consider the skyrocketing abortion rates of unborn children with Down syndrome, the euthanizing of the elderly with disabling conditions, and the new phenomena, after-birth abortion (the killing of infants with severe disabilities). Learn more by reading Life in the Balance or Beyond Suffering, both offered in our store; or visit our Christian Institute on Disability page to explore ways we can help you share Christ's love to those affected by disability. And for the sake of the Gospel, thank you for caring (and praying!)

Today here in Washington, DC I had interviews at Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) and also CNN. New statistics about autism were released today from the CDC -- now 1 in 88 children are diagnosed on the autism spectrum! Pray we can reach these families with the love of Christ.

joni and ken leaving for the airportWe're packing up our bags one more time and heading to Washington DC today for the William Wilberforce Weekend sponsored by the Colson Center. I'll be speaking on several panels, as well as presenting messages on the sanctity of life, the Christian's social responsibilities, and how Joni and Friends is promoting a biblical worldview on disability. The highlight will be when I receive the Wilberforce award on Saturday evening – what a privilege! Chuck Colson said, “Joni was selected for this award because -- like William Wilberforce – she has persevered and sacrificed to fight social injustice and to transform culture. She is a defiant, inspirational, joy-filled rebuttal to those who would assault the sanctity of human life." Wow, can you see why I feel so honored?

Even at this late hour, I am struggling – and fervently praying – about what to say in my 20 minute acceptance speech (and the two other times I'm speaking during the weekend). I so want to give honor to the Lord Jesus and to draw attention to the plight of the world’s one billion people with disabilities, 80% of whom live in developing nations. And in my heart, I ...

Thanks for Praying for Radio!

Okay, you know how I often ask you to pray that God will give me breath and strength for a full day of recording? Especially when I sing hymns on certain radio programs? Well, sometimes I just don't have the breath or strength to 'hold' a note, or even 'hit' a high one. So what do we do? Rainey, communications manager, jumps from her chair, wedges herself behind me and squeezes my abdomen so I have more breath (and it sounds like more energy). Also pictured is Tatiana, our new communications coordinator -- it's her job to keep me on schedule, turn my pages (my hands don't work, remember) and watch the timer. And what a GREAT day of radio recording Monday was -- THANK YOU for praying! And if you'd like to enjoy a little fruit for your efforts, then go visit our radio page and listen to a couple of programs -- Lord willing, they will inspire and refresh your heart!

joni and ken in the radio studioLast week after coming home from a busy ministry trip up in the Bay Area, I dove right into writing "Joni and Friends" radio programs – 30 four-minute scripts, and 47 one-minute ones. I’m always blessed hearing how the radio ministry encourages our listeners. And today, Monday, it’s going to be a full schedule from morning till late in the afternoon. Would you please ask God to give me His energy, His anointing, and His words as I record? I’ll be ‘locked’ in that studio all day, so thank you for praying that what we put down on tape will inspire and refresh all listeners… and to God be the glory!

Your Prayers Needed...

I realized seconds ago, I need prayer. In fact, my friend just snapped this photo (look at that 'runaway' desk!) as I was writing my message for the Wilberforce Award Banquet next week (we fly to DC on Wednesday, March 28). I also need to write 47 more radio programs as we'll be recording on Monday, March 26. And so, I'm asking for you to pray for me right now... in a big way. I don't want a time crunch to hamper the Holy Spirit's guidance as I seek God's heart for what He would have me to say, whether when receiving the Wilberforce award, or when recording on Monday. In short, I want to keep in step with His Spirit (Galatians 5:25). I know your prayers will open the way for as Phillip Brooks, the hymn writer wrote, "Do not pray for easy lives, pray your life be stronger...

yellow daffodilsI wheeled outside my front door this morning and it felt like… Spring. The breeze is crisp, the air, clear, and all the flowers by our driveway are in full bloom. All the way to work today, Ken and I kept praising the Lord for this fresh, new season. God could have given us gray, dull, lifeless landscapes, all dreary and barren – instead, he showcases his creative genius and love for variety by blessing us with colorful flowers, beautiful clouds, and brilliant, blue skies. No wonder my heart is singing today (and I hope yours is, too)!

The 'Work' of Spring

Spring is in the air and in just a few weeks, April showers will bring May flowers – with the help of sweating and spading, working and weeding, digging, fertilizing, planting and watering. Someone once said, "Spring is winter defrosting," and he was right. Each of us has experienced cold and bitter seasons of suffering – but that's when the Holy Spirit does his best working and weeding in our lives. It's not pleasant, but "Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it," says Hebrews 12:12. This season, I know that God will be using my wheelchair to do a deeper "work" on my character. But just knowing there's a hopeful, bountiful harvest on the horizon? It'll be more than worth it. :-). Join me in welcoming God's Spirit to...

Heading Home with Happy Hearts!

We leave the Bay Area today and head home for LA with tired bodies, but hearts filled to overflowing! I spoke on behalf of Joni and Friends Bay Area to over 6700 people from dozens of churches, casting a vision for them to reach more people with disabilities with the Gospel. On Sunday night at the closing service, I relished in meeting so many kids with disabilities and their parents after the meeting. One young man named Kevin has cerebral palsy and is non verbal… but he is able to communicate with an electronic board that he operates with his eyes – the sensor ‘reads’ where his eyes are focusing and ‘voices’ the sentences he constructs. What a happy little man who loves Jesus! They are planning to come to Family Retreat. And now, as we fly home, please be praying for safety and that the Holy Spirit will refresh our bodies, spirits and minds. We are so grateful that you journeyed with us this week through prayer!

Okay, remember my earlier post about the group of Chinese-Americans who came from Grace Point Church in Berkeley, CA to hear me speak the other night? Well, they came back last night with a whole bunch more from their church to hear the message I gave at Westgate Church in San Jose – I laughed and told them I was their token Caucasian among the Asian Invasion; Ken loved that! This group is really on fire now to reach for Christ special needs families hear in the Bay Area. Also, after our meeting at Westgate Church, I had a chance to sit and talk to MANY people with disabilities…. what a joy it is to hear how the grace of Jesus Christ is sustaining people in the toughest of circumstances – this man became spinal cord injured in a truck accident two years ago but, oh, his buoyant confidence in Christ was so inspiring! God bless you for praying for these people and the many thousands of others we are ministering to this weekend!
