joni and ken celebrating her 63rd birthdayOn this last day of October, I am 'over the top' with thanksgiving to God for all of you who participated in my "Birthday Gift" with a gift of $63!! Together, more than $7,400 was raised, and this means many more kids with disabilities, and adults, too, will receive a wheelchair, the Word of God, and a chance to hear the Good News of Jesus! And it wouldn't be happening, were it not for you. "May the Lord repay you for what you have done," says Ruth 2:12, "May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel." And that, friend, was written for you!

An Honor from Christianity Today

cover of christianity todayI was deeply touched to see my name included in this month’s issue of Christianity Today highlighting “50 Women to Watch.” I was especially glad to see that CT wrote “Life Advocate” under my name. More than 35 of the 45 years I’ve lived as a quadriplegic have been dedicated to advocacy for people with disabilities, whether newborns, the unborn, the elderly, or those with such significant impairments that most would say they were “better off dead than disabled.” At Joni and Friends, we are constantly spreading the word that a disability is not ‘the end of the world;’ and this CT article (pg7) definitely helps reinforce that important message. With the amazing grace of God, there is much more “ability” in disability than you can imagine!

I’m astounded at the many opportunities God has given me to share His Gospel during this October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month – had I never battled stage III breast cancer, these doors would have been closed. But praise God, this month I’ve had the chance to share ‘victory in Jesus’ with thousands of women and their families. This past Friday, PBS aired my ‘cancer journey’ on their Religion & Ethics program – click on the link and be encouraged!

woman singing hymnsYou know me – I love hymns. I love the rich doctrine in all the stanzas, as well as the melodies and harmonies. Well, recently Tommy Walker, worship leader at Community Bible Church and Christian Assembly, came out with wonderful arrangements for the classical old hymns -- I think Tommy’s done the best job of anyone in honoring these wonderful tunes, but making them modern. “In recent years, the hymns have often divided the generations when it comes to church worship,” says Tommy, “This project is a humble attempt to present these treasures of our faith in such a way that they will bring the generations back together again.” I agree! Take a few moments today on Sunday, to sing along – here’s the link!

joni and julie-anneThis is the last weekend Julie-Anne will be interning with us at the Joni and Friends International Disability Center – she’s been working hard in connection with our Christian Institute on Disability. It's been such a joy getting to know this remarkable young woman who has a big passion to head back to Alabama and share Christ's love with other people with disabilities. How did it all begin? Julie-Anne read the Joni book when she was a youngster (she even brought her old, tattered copy for me to autograph… I’d love to know if you read that original book with the yellow cover)! We say a heartfelt goodbye and many thanks to Julie-Anne for her service with us!

joni in front of a mirror during cancer treatmentTomorrow CBN’s 700 Club will be airing an interview I recorded recently on my journey through breast cancer – I am amazed at the many opportunities God has opened up this month for me to talk about God's protection and provision during my battle against breast cancer. Never did I dream that cancer would give me a chance to minister to so many, many women dealing with this disease – I am...

joni and doug mazza looking at his ipadDoug Mazza, president of Joni and Friends (JAF) and I are so grateful to God for the excellent group of men and women who serve on our international board of directors – these Christian leaders give generously of their time, wisdom, and resources to advance the cause of Christ through Joni and Friends (and virtually all of them have volunteered, either on Wheels for the World trips or at Family Retreats)! Today’s board meeting at the International Disability Center begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs through 4:00 p.m. Proverbs 15:22 says that “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed” so please join me in asking God to lead our discussions and guide our decisions as we tackle the work at hand.

I love spreading the encouragement of Christ, so take a few minutes and listen to this interview between me and Nancy Leigh DeMoss during the recent True Woman 2012 Conference in Indianapolis. When I think of the many hurting people who are struggling and looking for encouragement, I think of these words from the Heidelberg Confession: “My comfort in life and in death… is that I am not my own, but belong—both body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior...who preserves me so much that, without the will of my Heavenly Father, not one hair can fall from my head.” Join me in thanking God that you and I can shine the light of Christ all the more brightly through the fiery trials He sends!

Last Friday, Keith and Kristyn Getty stopped by the Joni and Friends International Disability Center – we shared a delightful lunch and then Keith had an idea. He ran to his car, grabbed his guitar, and he and Kristyn put on an impromptu concert for our staff – how good of God to bless us with their ministry of music! And how good it felt to lift our praises to the Lord in song! Take a look at this heartwarming video and sing along…

joni celebrating her birthday with a cake from her friend giuseppeGiuseppe, owner of my favorite Italian restaurant, just dropped by moments ago to bring a tiramisu birthday cake – yum! Today is my birthday and I am praising God for His grace that has brought me this far, all the way to 63! I'm breaking all sorts of spinal-cord injury statistics, and I credit it all to God's amazing grace :-). And I want to thank you for responding to Ken's invitation to 'celebrate' with me through your gift of $63 to Joni and Friends – so many of you responded and I was overwhelmed by your comments and congratulations! I can't help but think of all the many more people with disabilities who will be reached for Christ through our efforts together – what a gift! Again, many thanks!
