joni in her office speaking to a group of young kidsOctober is upon us and in just two weeks, I'll be traveling to Chicago to speak to the conference of the Association of Christian Schools International. Yes, I want to encourage Christian teachers as they build godly character in young students, but I also want to touch on the need of reaching kids with disabilities. So please pray that the Lord Jesus will give me his ideas (they're always the best). Ask our Savior to help me cast the vision and...

joni and francie and ken gardening at their homeWell, Saturday morning started off with Francie, my secretary, coming up to our house to help me type radio programs. But it was just too beautiful of a day to spend at the computer! “Hey, let’s go to Sperling’s Nursery,” someone said, and in the next hour, we were wandering through the nursery choosing fall flowers: purple salvia, yellow chrysanthemums, calendulas and white impatiens – just enough to...

joni, john macarthur, robert, and bobbieNow that we've officially moved into the Fall season, my heart is singing a whole bunch of harvest and Pilgrim hymns. I can't help it – today, when I wheeled outside into the crisp, cold morning, I breathed deeply and burst into, "Oh Worship the King!" (Okay, it's not quite a harvest hymn; but it was the first thing that came to mind :-). Want to sing along with me? Then check out...

book cover of Joni bookI'm meeting more people who are giving the Joni book to their children and grandchildren – it humbles me! I was reminded afresh of how God is using it (written in 1976) when Linda recently wrote, "Dear Joni, I have been meaning to write to you for 25 years! While reading your book (your 1st book) I committed my life to Christ - when I read your words that Christ is God!! God used your book to reach my heart. I was raised in a Baptist Church but had never heard the truth about God and Jesus being the same. Boy, does that makes a huge difference in understanding God. FROM THE VERY BOTTOM OF MY HEART, I THANK YOU FOR WRITING THAT BOOK." That's quite a review :-). If you know someone who is struggling to understand God (especially if they are hurting), pray about giving them the Joni book. Linda would thank you!

joni speaking at cedarville universityOh, friends, thank you for praying us through our recent trip to Ohio for our Bioethics conference, our Through the Roof Disability Training Summit, and other Joni and Friends' Ohio events. I kept pinching myself, amazed at the incredible energy and stamina that was obviously God-sent. I wish you could have been on the front row as I sat before over 3000 students at the Cedarville University chapel (photo above) to cast a vision for reaching the world's one billion disabled for Christ -- the comments from students afterward thrilled my heart and brought tears. I encouraged them to...

ken fly fishingYep, while I'm in Ohio, Ken heads to the Madison River Valley in Montana for a little fly fishing with his best buddies (great meals, Bible and book discussions, fly casting lessons, then wading the Madison to cast for world-class trout). Ken's become an expert in the art of choosing the right lure that'll fool fish into thinking it's a "real" insect. (Reminds me of the way Satan "lures" us into thinking his pleasures...

joni and and rainey in the radio studioEarlier this week, I headed into the studio at 9:30 a.m. to record a ton of "Joni and Friends" radio programs, 60 one-minute features, station promos, and public service announcements. (This was the session that had to be rescheduled after last week’s problems with our sound board). Halfway through the day, I felt like collapsing from, well… a lot of pain in my hip. True, we had already prayed to begin the day, but we stopped and utterly cast ourselves at Jesus’ feet, asking for mercy and His might. God used that prayer (along with yours) to give me a huge push to the finish line (which we reached at 4:00 pm). As we shut down the board, Zechariah 4:6 was ringing in my heart, “This is the word of the Lord… ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty.” And may the Spirit of Jesus Christ rest on you this weekend, friend!

As I write, the Republican Presidential debate is about to start up at the Reagan Library just minutes away from our International Disability Center (join Ken and me in praying for the candidates as they share their views). But late yesterday afternoon, we welcomed the crew from the Christian Broadcasting Network who will be broadcasting interviews live this evening after the debate. Great friends, they are...

People Who Inspire Joni: Zhang Xu

Dr. Zhang Xu, a young orthopedic surgeon from the People’s Republic of China, was serving his government in Yemen when he suffered a serious spinal-cord injury in a diving accident which left him a quadriplegic. When he was brought back to Beijing, he was at death’s door. While at the China Rehabilitation Research Center, a Christian Japanese physical therapist (working temporarily at CRRC) gave Zhang Xu a tattered copy of the Joni book. When Zhang Xu read my story, the Holy Spirit began working on his heart – within the next few months (with his mother at his bedside with paper and pencil), he translated the entire book into Mandarin. Shortly afterward, Zhang Xu prayed to receive Christ and was baptized. A house church pastor approved the manuscript and it went to press – it’s a great translation with all the scriptures intact and our Wheels for the World teams now distribute this book on all our wheelchair distributions in China (along with Mandarin Bibles). Zhang Xu was eventually able to get his Master’s degree in Rehab Counseling from San Diego State University – he now leads a thriving disability ministry outreach in his town of Anshan in northern China ...
