Very shortly, Joni will be traveling to Cedarville University in Ohio along with Dr. Kathy McReynolds of the Joni and Friends Christian Institute on Disability – both will be presenters at Bioethics Conference 2011 highlighting end-of-life issues and ministry.

“These are difficult times for many elderly people, what with healthcare reform and the euthanasia movement gaining steam,” says Joni. “We as Christians need to get equipped, and I hope many people throughout the Ohio River Valley will sign up for this important conference!”

Joni and Friends/Ohio will also be sponsoring a Through the Roof Summit for people interested in starting or expanding disability ministry in their church. For more information, visit www.cedarville.edu/bioethics2011.

luis and norma from Dominican Republic with Joni at Family RetreatMeet Luis (a paraplegic in a wheelchair) and his wife, Norma de Villar from the Dominican Republic – they came to Family Retreat this summer with two other families from the DR to experience firsthand the fun and fellowship. Why such an investment of time and travel? We are asking God to use them as ‘seed families’ to help plant a Joni and Friends Family Retreat in their country!...

I arrived early this morning, rested and refreshed, ready to launch into a very busy, full day of recording "Joni and Friends" radio programs and 60 one-minute features. But Jim, our producer, gave us the surprising news that our soundboard wasn't working. After fiddling with wires, knobs, and exploring options, we decided to reschedule it for Wednesday, September 7. I'm not too disappointed, though – this gives me a chance to catch up with things at my desk. Thanks for your prayers which, I know, God will apply directly to next week's recording date :-).

joni in the radio studioOn Monday morning I'll head into the studio to record 30 "Joni and Friends" radio programs, 60 Diamonds in the Dust one-minute features, and a bunch of messages for radio stations. After we begin with prayer, we will pretty much go nonstop (it takes that long to record). Please ask the Holy Spirit to give me fresh energy, a comfortable day sitting up, a strong voice, lots of breath, and a heart bent on honoring Jesus every minute of this marathon. Pray for Jim Sanders, running the board, Rainey Floreen, keeping scripts organized, Amy Hurtado, taking care of all details (and Ken will probably drop by, too)! I'm always humbled by I Peter 4:11 when I'm at the microphone, so "Help me watch my words, Lord Jesus!"

cameroon family retreatNo matter where it's held, a Family Retreat is all about exalting Christ, sharing his joy, and celebrating his 'ability' in our disabilities. Magdalene Manyi, our Joni and Friends Affiliate in Cameroon, organized an unforgettable Retreat for impoverished families with special-needs in her country. On the last day, Magdalene reported, "This was the second Family Retreat for our country; a week of joy, laughter and spiritual encouragement. We are finishing out our time this morning...

Last Friday, my new Christmas cards arrived at Joni and Friends – greet Billy (Supervisor in our Fulfillment Department) and Jean (Director of our Correspondence Department) who helped stack the many boxes of cards. I am really excited about these new designs that celebrate the birth of Jesus...

Greg and Jelena Sivulka have three children, one of whom is Hannah who happens to have autism. The Sivulka family lives in Serbia – when they realized God was calling them to reach other special-needs families in their country, they contacted Joni and Friends. Working with Greg and Jelena, we've now held two Family Retreats in Serbia, with many families hearing the Gospel of Christ for the first time! I was so pleased when this extraordinary couple took it upon themselves to get the Joni book translated and published into Serbian...

joni next to a poster promoting the Joni movieEarlier this month after my visit to the Bonclarken Family Retreat, my friends and I visited the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, NC (first time for us)! Having spoken at 12 Graham crusades, and played my part in the Joni movie, it was a very moving experience (they have an old Joni movie poster on display… I was 28 years old when I played my part in the film produced by the Graham Association). My eyes got damp when I saw a video of Mr. Graham’s 1992 crusade in Moscow, Russia – Ken and I will never forget the night the Red Army choir sang “The Battle Hymn of the Republic."...

joni with an stm and his buddy at family retreatTo me, it's remarkable the way the Lord pairs young people with disabilities with the men and women who serve as short-term missionaries at our Family Retreats. Take the friendship that blossomed between Jeff (the guy with the winning smile on the far left) and Stephen (the handsome kid in the middle). The lives of both of these fellows are changed forever, all because of a week of Spirit-blessed fun and fellowship at Family Retreat this past week.

joni and friends staff having lunch at family retreatLast week, a group of us flew in from the International Disability Center to serve at the Family Retreat at Bonclarken, North Carolina, each coming with a different set of skills. On the far left is Careen, who got me up every morning and to bed every night, watered and fed me, and held every book for an autograph. Next is Rainey, our...
