joni and ken with the 'joni' scholarship recipientI'm deeply honored that Azusa Pacific University has established the Joni Eareckson Tada Scholarship Award (with the help of our friends at Ambassador Agency led by Peg Campbell on the right). And the happy young woman in the middle? She’s Angelica, the very first recipient of the scholarship award! Angelica is a senior at APU who plans to work with children with autism when she...

Kim's Journey to Jordan...

Meet my friend Kim, from Tulsa Oklahoma – when she heard about Wheels for the World and our upcoming outreach to Jordan in the Middle East, God's Spirit began moving in her heart. Especially when she learned that we love having people with disabilities serve on Wheels teams (what a great witness to see disabled people in positions of leadership)! During the Jordanian wheelchair distribution, our team will be giving all the special-needs families Joni books in Arabic (remember, Jordan is a nation where Islam is the predominant religion). Pray that Kim's ministry will be powerful in the Holy Spirit and wonderfully effective – they leave in less than two weeks!

joni and ken with zondervanYep, you heard it here first. The folks at Zondervan Publishing really, really want Ken and me to write a book together and to call it Joni and Ken: A Love Story. It'll be the first time Ken and I have ever written anything together; we would share how God used my struggle against breast cancer to deepen our intimacy with Him and with each other (we sure learned some tough, demanding lessons). The Zondervan leadership (bookending Ken and me in the photo) asked us, “Why do you want to write this book?” and the answer was simple...

Getting together with Robert and Bobbie Wolgemuth always makes for beautiful harmony -- for us, it's just natural to break into a couple of hymns inside a hotel lobby or standing outside an Outback Steak House! And with our friends Bruce and Sue Osterink (far left), we had a virtual choir. Don't you love it when the Spirit of Christ brings old and new friends together around a couple of hymns? Robert and Bobbie did the "What Wondrous Love Is This" Book/CD series years ago... and we haven't stopped singing since :-). Today we head to Zondervan Publishing (and maybe they'll consider re-releasing the Joni book to a new generation of younger readers?!). After our meeting, we head back to Chicago tonight, so bless you for praying for safety as we travel. We're on the home stretch!

joni, ken, careen, and rainey at cracker barrelSo why would we choose to drive to Grand Rapids rather than fly? Getting me on and off a puddle-jumper plane is not a pretty sight, plus, it's a bit risky for my power wheelchair. So we opted to drive north through some of the most beautiful Fall color -- the leaves were just at the very end of their glorious reds and yellows. God is amazing, lining the road with such stunning scenery. Of course...

joni signing booksI love a 'booksigning line' -- you get to actually talk to people, hear their stories, pray with them and, of course, sign their books. It was heartwarming to hear these Christian school teachers share how my message yesterday inspired them on (and to learn that many use the Joni book as part of their classroom curriculum). And afterward? We grabbed a late lunch...

joni speakingThere's something extremely humbling about wheeling out on a stage to give a message that thousands will hear -- what an honor, what a privilege! That's how I felt when these Christian educators rose to their feet to welcome me to the Association of Christian Schools International conference. "Disability is never convenient; it is almost always costly; and, yes, it involves sacrifice," I shared, "but the lessons it can teach about dependence on God and others in the classroom are priceless." On the whole, I encouraged these teachers to reach out and embrace children with special needs in their classrooms -- it'll require thinking 'outside the box,' but the rewards are rich and eternal. (I'm happy that this message will now become part of the ACSI virtual resource library for Christian schools around the globe to access).

So thank you, dear friends, for lifting me up in prayer this afternoon -- I sensed a special presence from the Spirit of Christ as I spoke (and with the extra few minutes I still had at the end, I was able to squeeze in a closing hymn... my favorite thing to do anyway!) Tomorrow we return to the ACSI conference for ...

joni eareckson tada working with careen on their laptopIt's a cold, windy, gray day here in Chicago -- a perfect time to catch up on work in Careen and Rainey's hotel room while Ken takes a snooze. We enjoyed a quick, comfortable flight and -- praise the Lord -- my wheelchair arrived in one piece! Today is a day of rest and looking over my notes for my Thursday session at the Association of Christian Schools International Convention. This is a great opportunity -- ACSI reaches more than 3.9 million students from nearly 23,000 schools in more than 100 countries. Please ask the Lord to give us solid sleep tonight so that I can awake refreshed and ready to share!

joni and kenEarly Tuesday morning Ken and I (with helper Rainey) fly to Chicago where I'll speak at the Association of Christian Schools International conference. I'm scheduled to give my message Thursday afternoon, 3:15 PM central time. Yes, I plan to offer Christ-centered encouragement to the attendees (including those watching by live video-feed in regional locations), but I'll also talk about the need for Christian schools to embrace young people who are not as 'able' as their classmates. I feel a deep need for your prayers, so thank you for remembering me this week in your intercessions (safely transferring on and off planes, good rest, alert minds, strong backs, and happy hearts)! Also, I'm still overflowing with...

joni with a birthday hat ongroup of joni and friends staff who share a birthday in october
Every month, Joni and Friends holds a special 'birthday break,' and last week, all JAF staff whose birthdays are in October gathered with their coworkers in the break area to celebrate – Karen, a volunteer, always generously bakes fresh cakes for the occasion. It's a great time to catch up with one another (and also a chance for us to wear some pretty silly birthday hats :-). But that's okay. No one should be above wearing a ridiculous hat every once in a while :-)!
