Earlier today, a visitor asked me, “Are you a type A personality?” I can’t remember exactly what that means, but I know I love the mission God's given me, and I'm invigorated by the work. I'm not so ‘into’ work, though, that I don’t carve out lots of time to just enjoy God's blessings. Like the recent PET scan report.  I'm still overflowing with joy; still celebrating in the style of Psalm 68:3, “But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful.”

Joni Eareckson Tada and Rainey Floreen in the radio studioIf you're looking for a woman who works hard, and keeps a chipper attitude through thick-or-thin, then you need to meet my friend and coworker, Lorraine Floreen (or Rainey as we affectionately call her around Joni and Friends). She came on board with JAF over seven years ago to head up our Joni and Friends' radio ministry, and has been doing a great job expanding our radio outreach into new broadcasting formats, as well as into different languages (like Chinese)!

Love your posts! It's why you need to see how we celebrated the results of my PET scan yesterday - you see, every morning for the past couple of months, I've been wheeling by 36 little pink ducks on top of the file cabinet outside my office (placed there by Cheri, our Marketing Director). Some mornings they're arranged in a cute figure-eight; other times, all in a row; and occasionally, like they're square dancing...

Joni and Ken looking at each other
Ken and I just received word that the results of the PET scan I underwent last week are clear! Actually, what my doctor said was “No evidence of metastasized cancer… that’s great news!” Thank you for praying – I thought of your intercessions last week as Ken lifted me up onto the imaging table and I went into that big “tube.” Now that we have this good report, we’ll be able to better plan my ministry activity for the rest of the year. God is gracious and merciful for “He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouting” (Job 8:21). Thanks for rejoicing with us!

This week, one year after the devastating earthquake of January 2010, we are lifting up the still-pressing needs of the people of Haiti. I'm so grateful that, in the last 12 months, Joni and Friends has been able to help ‘lighten’ the burden of some of those disabled by the quake. In just a few weeks we will be sending another Wheels for the World team into Haiti with mobility equipment and holding a pastor’s conference to help Christian leaders reach out to people with disabilities...

A friend passed by my office yesterday, saw me at my computer, and leaned in to say, “Looks like you’re back in the groove, Joni!” I smiled, grateful I’ve regained my energy and strength since last year’s chemo. On the other hand, little red flags started waving in my head. I don’t want to be back in a groove. Remember a few months ago I shared how the Holy Spirit was teaching me to “keep in step” with Him? And those steps were very small, very simple? That’s how I need to live my days. Like today…

Happy New Year, friend, and I hope you enjoyed a blessed season celebrating Jesus' birth. I want to share something special I learned over the holidays – you see, it was early on the morning of December 24 in 2003 when my mother-in-law died from pancreatic cancer in our home. It was an extremely sad day for us all, but especially for Ken who loved his mother dearly. Watching my husband doubled over in grief, I remember thinking, Lord, why Christmas Eve? Why not January 6 or December 3? From now on, Christmas Eve will be marked by so much sadness for Ken. And for the next six years, it was.
