When I think of great saints of the past, Amy Carmichael always comes to mind – I read her books when I was a teenager and a new Christian; her testimony inspired me tremendously. As a missionary to India in the early 1900s, Amy was heartbroken to see so many young girls enslaved in Hindu temple-prostitution. She founded an orphanage and rescued over 1,000 children who otherwise would have faced a bleak future. While serving in India, Amy received a letter from a woman who was considering life as a missionary – she asked Amy, “What is missionary life like?” to which Amy wrote back, “Missionary life is simply a chance to die.” Amy Carmichael wrote many books, including If which is a collection of her remarkable poems and essays. Another classic is A Chance to Die: The Life and Legacy of Amy Carmichael written by Elisabeth Elliot.
