Emmanuel receiving a restored wheelchair form Joni and FriendsThousands of children with disabilities in developing countries like Romania, urgently need kid sized wheelchairs, yet they are in critically short supply and very expensive. Wheelchairs sometimes cost up to a year’s salary, which most families with special needs children cannot afford. Recently our Joni and Friends Wheels for the World team met 9-year-old Emmanuel at our wheelchair distribution. Your support and prayers gave Emmanuel a Bible in his own language and a beautiful Joni and Friends restored wheelchair perfect for his needs. His mother shared with us that as she watched our volunteer physical therapist work on her son’s wheelchair, she was deeply moved. “You care so much about every detail—I’ve never seen anyone care about my son to this degree. This kind of care can only come from God. Only God loves like this.” Thanks to your partnership and prayers, God came close to Emmanuel and his family that day...

8-year-old Andrea in her new pediatric wheelchiar, with her parentsTo declare the Gospel and to demonstrate Jesus’ love. Eight-year-old Andrea was born with cerebral palsy. Abandoned by her parents when she was just 5 months old, Andrea was raised by her grandparents. They worry about her future and work hard to provide for all her needs but struggle to make ends meet. Andrea needs a wheelchair but her grandparents will never be able to afford one. They leave her on the floor alone when they go to work in the cornfields for a couple hours. “There is no one to look after her and we worry very much,” Andrea’s grandfather told us. But everything changed at a recent Wheels for the World distribution in Guatemala. Andrea received a brand-new Joni and Friends pediatric wheelchair that fit her perfectly. It is a gift that will bring her into the light and sunshine once again and display the love God has for her. She will now be able to...

Javier with his motherIn Cuba, 9-year-old Javier and his mother came to a recent Joni and Friends Wheels for the World outreach in need of a wheelchair and left with much more. Wheelchairs are very expensive and difficult to get. As a wheelchair for Javier was custom fit for his body by our volunteer physical therapist, Javier smiled and told us, “I’m very happy you’re giving me a wheelchair… I feel so special!” As Javier’s mother watched, she was filled with joy for her son. “This wheelchair is a gift from your Heavenly Father,” we told her. Immediately she crumbled in tears. “I am so alone… there is no one I can turn to.” Maria and Javier heard the Gospel and were introduced to a pastor. A connection was made with a local church and Javier and his mom will now have a Christian community to support them and show them the love of Christ. Your gifts of a...

LEGO in a wheelchairMy nephews are grown now, but when they were kids one of their favorite toys were LEGO® bricks. The boys had so much fun interlocking the tiny, colorful bricks to build all kinds of things — including “ramps” like the ones their Aunt Joni used. Toys can create a wonderful opportunity for children to develop a more positive attitude towards people with disabilities. It’s why I’m so excited that LEGO® has announced its first-ever minifigure with a disabilityto go on sale this June — a figurine of a person in a...
