Can you imagine what it would be like to not be able to go to school and be outcast by your community? This is the world in which Francis Mugwanya grew up as a boy paralyzed by polio. In his home country of Uganda, 90% of children with disabilities are not able to go to school because they do not have a mobility device such as a wheelchair, walker, or pair of crutches. As a child, Francis depended on his brother to ride him on a bicycle to and from school. It wasn't until he was 11-years-old that Francis received his first wheelchair from an organization that serves people with disabilities. Today, Francis and his family give back, serving Ugandans with disabilities in the name of Jesus. We are proud to partner with Francis’ ministry, "Father's Heart Mobility Ministry," and together reach the people of Uganda. It’s why we invite you to watch a video of Francis and Joni as they talk about the great need in developing countries and how you can make a difference.
For parents, the realization that your child has a disability hits hard. But be encouraged, you are not alone! Doug Mazza and Steve Bundy share their experiences as fathers of children with disability. In Another Kind of Courage, you will learn about God's design for fathers of families affected by disability. Mothers and wives, you'll get a valuable look inside the heart and mind of your husband, gaining insight about his journey as the father of a child with a disability. This book would make a great Father’s Day gift for any father impacted by disability!

Do you want to encourage a special needs family this summer? Send a few Happy Grams to families attending Family Retreat! Happy Grams are simple notes of encouragement that are available for families and STMs to send to one another during Retreat. This year, we’re inviting you to get involved as well! So many families arrive at Family Retreat feeling weighed down by headaches and hardships; your Happy Grams will give them a warm and encouraging welcome! All you have to do is print out our Happy Gram template then jot down a few words, Scripture, or assurance that you are praying for them. You can even get your kids involved with decorating or writing their own messages! Once you've finished filling out your Happy Grams, send them in to Joni and Friends at PO Box 3333, Agoura Hills, CA 91376. We’ll distribute your encouragement to special needs families as they...
Ken and I were just with our Joni and Friends team in Eastern Pennsylvania, and now, today on May 17, these same co-workers are heading to Nanjing, Anshan, and Harbin – they are loaded down with wheelchairs, Joni books in Chinese, Bibles, and disability ministry training materials. Please be praying for the success of the Gospel as we minister in three major cities in China. Also ask God to grant our 3 Wheels teams a safe journey, health and strength, boldness in sharing Jesus' love, and wisdom in fitting each wheelchair to every disabled person's specific needs. "Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel" (Ephesians 6:19).
This month at Joni and Friends, we have a very special ministry opportunity. Thanks to some generous friends, every gift you give will be doubled, up to $250,000! God is giving us this Matching Gift Opportunity just when we need it most – worldwide, brokenhearted little children languish for lack of mobility; stigma and shame isolate families inside their homes; marriages crumble under financial and emotional hardship. But with your help, we can answer them. Your gift today sends the Good News of Jesus Christ and tangible hands-on help. And because of this Matching Gift Opportunity, your gift will go twice as far, touching double the lives! Please consider contributing to Joni and Friends this month. Your faithfulness will lift many more thousands into new life in Christ this year!
Family Retreats are around the corner and we need your help! The success of any Joni and Friends Family Retreat depends largely on having enough 'helping hands' to serve the special-needs families who attend. This year, most of our Family Retreats filled up very quickly with families – but we do not have enough volunteer Short-Term Missionaries (STMs) to serve them. In fact, several of our retreats are in great need of STMs! If you feel a prompting to come and volunteer, consider serving at one these retreats with the greatest need of your help – and thank you for serving Jesus by ministering to these families!
