Rita in her wheelchair from Joni and Friends“We never found anyone to help us until you came!” said Rita with joy, as she was fitted for her new wheelchair by Wheels for the World therapists at the Ghana outreach. Disabled by polio as an infant, Rita has never walked. She has crawled to school every year, determined to succeed even in a country where disabled people like her are stigmatized and shunned. Time and again she applied for a wheelchair from the government only to be turned down each time. “Psalm 23 tells me that the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want,” Rita told us. “When man says no, God says yes!” She continued, “My dream is to feel socially valued, to be economically able. The school for communication technology is in town. This wheelchair from Joni and Friends gives me independence and makes that dream possible.” With every prayer you pray and every gift you give, you are saying yes to God’s beautiful plan for disabled people of all ages just like Rita. When you send a wheelchair and a Bible...

Telly AwardThe Joni and Friends Television Series was honored earlier this month at the 34th annual Telly Award ceremony. The premiere award for TV programming, Telly Award seeks to promote creativity, acknowledging excellence in television, film and commercials. This year, Telly received more than 12,000 submissions from around the globe. Joni and Friends received a bronze Telly Award in the religious television show category for inspiring stories of hope and healing. The 30-minute weekly program hosted by Joni Eareckson Tada highlights an unusually open and honest approach to tough questions about the goodness of God in a world shattered by pain and suffering. Presenting a dramatic look into the lives of real people who have endured or are still living through heart-wrenching trials, the TV series puts Scripture to the toughest of tests, showing why God is worth believing and how to trust Him in the worst of times. Two episodes stood out to the Telly Award committee and persuaded them to...

Lindsay and Elijah at Family RetreatHow does God bring fresh, new life to a weary special needs family at Family Retreat? It starts with your prayers, your volunteer service, and your generous giving. Because of you, hundreds of families have experienced exciting worship, heart-to-heart sharing, His dynamic word, loving friends and joy-filled activities − all set in the beauty of His creation. As moms, dads, and kids pray and play together, God powerfully unites them like never before. Best of all, God uses Family Retreat to bring people closer to Him − and that’s where the healing begins. “After my son Elijah became disabled, I lost my connection to God,” explained Lindsay, a single mom. “The minute I got to Family Retreat, I realized that people had prayed for us. God led us to this place of spiritual refreshment.” Lindsay and her family have given their hearts to Christ and are growing closer together as they grow closer to Him. “Family Retreat is the best place on earth,” says Lindsay. “It’s where I found my connection with God!” Thanks to your faithfulness, they’re back at Family Retreat this summer, stronger than ever ... and still growing! Your prayers brought Lindsay and Elijah to Family Retreat, where her joy in Christ was restored.

MMB interns serving at Family RetreatMMB interns in Haiti
After a busy and fruitful month, our Cause 4 Life Ministry and Missions Bootcamp (MMB) interns have returned to their homes around the US. We’re already missing their smiling faces around the International Disability Center! Their first week was filled with Beyond Suffering course training to build a strong biblical foundation for their service the following weeks. After that, the group headed up north to the Santa Cruz mountains to serve at the Mission Springs Family Retreat. Each intern was paired up with a specific family and was able to serve alongside our incredible STM volunteers! For the final...

More International Family Retreats – Serbian Style

Woman holding Joni book in SerbianZdravo from Serbia! Can you believe it? Family Retreats in Serbia?! Yes, and we were able to give the standard Family Retreat program a real Balkan twist! Don and Cindy Prince of Joni and Friends West Michigan helped provide leadership and give the Gospel to these families of special-needs children. A wonderfully enthusiastic group of volunteers (STMs) from the US helped energize everyone with games and super-fun activities – one of the STMs is Amy, our Cause 4 Life intern; she specializes in communications/autism and was able to provide helpful autism 'education' to Serbian moms and dads. Barriers came crumbling down as parents received one-on-one consultation – and most had never heard that their child could be a "blessing from God." Tears flowed freely and in hearts were wide-opened to the Spirit of Jesus. So thank you, friend, for your gifts and prayers that make ministry like this possible!  (See more photos)

Wilber receiving the Good News at a Wheels for the World outreach“I dove into the water and felt my neck crack. I floated upside down for a long time praying someone would rescue me. I held my breath and waited…” Familiar words, aren’t they? Yet these are not Joni’s words – they belong to 26-year-old Wilber Blanco in El Salvador. His diving accident resulted in quadriplegia, mirroring Joni’s injury exactly. No wonder Wilber couldn’t read Joni’s book fast enough at a recent Wheels for the World outreach. In the 18 months since the accident, Wilber has spent his days alone, lying in a chair in his grandmother’s house. His parents have moved out of the country, and Wilber longs to live with them again soon. But without a wheelchair, he has little hope for the future. Through you, God...

As a part of our Cause 4 Life internship program, interns receive hands-on disability ministry experience, often serving on an international mission trip. Recently, we had a team of interns return from a very encouraging and fruitful trip to Uganda – it was filled with opportunities to show God’s love to many people touched by disability! Here’s an exciting update from our Cause 4 Life team leader: “The Uganda trip was absolutely amazing! We were able to serve at the school in the classrooms, train special education teachers, and put on VBS activities. We also served on a field trip to the airport and...
