Apra in her new wheelchairHer face says it all! Off the ground and seated in a wheelchair, Apra will be able to live comfortably in her family’s home. Two hours outside Chiang Mai, in Thailand’s rural countryside, Apra’s parents scratch out a meager living as migrant farmers. They love Apra so much, but her cerebral palsy makes it impossible for them to care for her in their dirt-floor hut. So five years ago, Apra’s parents made the difficult decision to have her live in a nearby center for disabled children. Apra’s parents visit her every chance they get. And when they’re together, they pray that somehow God would make it possible for them to live together again. They are a Christian family in desperate need. Recently little Apra was brought to our Wheels for the World distribution by the workers at the Center. There, God answered 5 years of fervent prayer with the gift of a wheelchair that is collapsible and built for...

Starting up the climbing wall, Scotty is cheered on by his STM Ben At Family Retreat your “love in action” teaches kids with disabilities how to break down the walls and reach higher than ever before! Short Term Missionary Ben knows this firsthand. He came to Family Retreat as a kid and for five years he was on the receiving end. One year he had a Short Term Missionary who also had a disability – and Ben caught the bug! The next year he signed up to be an STM. “I never realized STM’s were as blessed as campers,” Ben said. “I’ve been serving every year since!” “Out in the world, kids like Scotty are told, ‘you can’t do this’ – but at Family Retreat there’s nothing they can’t do well,” says Ben. “As STM’s we come alongside to support and encourage and show them they can do so much more than they think they can!” Take the rock-climbing wall for instance. “This is something our campers would normally be told they can’t do,” explains Ben. “At Family Retreat we do whatever we can...

Courage and his parentsYour heart to reach little children with God’s love stretches across continents! Courage is 4 years old and lives in coastal Africa, where he has been given no diagnosis for his cerebral palsy, no medical help, and no means of mobility. Little Courage is aptly named. For he will need all the power and courage God can give him to live victoriously in a place like this. Because of your faithful support, that’s exactly what happened! “Today a disabled person on the street told me, ‘Joni and Friends is here!’” Courage’s father said. Wheels for the World returns to this rural area of Ghana several times a year. Your faithfulness makes it possible to establish strong roots and local connections that serve long and deep in communities...

Victoria in her new Pediatric Wheelchair6-year old Victoria spent every day sitting beside the dirt road while her mother sold the few vegetables she grew. Because Victoria has cerebral palsy, she is unable to walk or attend school. Her mother has no money for a wheelchair – such a thing costs more than she earns in a year. For six years Victoria waited – until your love sent a miracle that changed everything! Joy broke over mother and daughter as Victoria was seated in a new Regency Pediatric Wheelchair. “This wheelchair you have given us is a manifestation of God’s word and His love coming true,” Victoria’s mother said. “You have lifted us from shame and placed God’s love on our lives!” Little Victoria now attends school in her village, where the astonishing story of her wheelchair is being shared with curious neighbors, friends, family members and...

Joe and Brandon at Family Retreat Every summer all across the country, people of all ages pour into Family Retreats —all with one thing in common: a great big heart full of love to give away. They’re called Short Term Missionaries—STM’s—and their job is simple: to serve a family with disability in the love and strength of Jesus that brings transformation to everybody involved—including themselves! Joe is a fireman, a strapping young man with absolutely no disability experience. He arrived at Family Retreat ready to serve—but a little nervous, too. After a day of training, Joe was paired with Brandon, who has Angelman’s Syndome and is non-verbal. Flexibility, patience, love, and yet more flexibility followed for five days as Brandon and Joe learned to communicate and love each other. Up and down hills they roamed, often Joe carrying Brandon on...
