Heart for the Disabled Breaks all Records

joni and ken with a group of kids at the idcNo doubt you heard that Joni and Friends recently held Heart for the Disabled week – listeners to Joni's radio program and readers of her blog sent in homemade Valentine cards, gift certificates, poems, copies of hymns, Scriptures, and letters of encouragement to five different special-need families. And this year was a record breaker – we received hundreds more notes and cards than in years past!

If you sent in a note, we want to thank you for participating with us to make this coming February 14 a truly memorable day for these disabled people and their families. We also want to thank the home school group from Dr. John MacArthur's Grace Community Church who dropped by to hand-deliver their homemade Valentines – thanks, boys and girls!

Helping Churches Become Accessible!

wheelchair lift at front of churchwheelchair lift - close upMountain View Community Church in Colorado was built in 1907, long before ramps and elevators became common in church buildings. Joni and Friends’ Christian Fund for the Disabled provided a matching grant to the church in order to help them install an elevator (all while satisfying requirements of the Colorado State Historic Fund)! Pastor McConahy told us, “We have already seen the fruit of some elderly ladies coming to worship with us who live in public housing – they live just one block away and use electric scooters, so this elevator will get lots of use.” Joni and Friends is working hard to help churches like Mountain View create access not only in their buildings, but their church outreach programs, too. Visit our Church Relations department to find out how your congregation can better serve special needs families!

Joni Eareckson Tada, longtime ministry leader, radio host and disability advocate, has been selected to receive the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) Hall of Fame Award at the group’s annual meeting next month. Founder of the Joni and Friends International Disability Center and host of the Joni and Friends radio and television programs, Tada has a storied tenure in religious broadcasting circles, as well as in the publishing and speaking arenas.

“I know of no better testimony of how Christ’s strength is made perfect through weakness than the life of Joni Eareckson Tada,” said Dr. Frank Wright, NRB president and CEO. “Joni has stared suffering in the face and seen the face of Christ. It is our honor and privilege to induct her into NRB’s Hall of Fame.”

Following a paralyzing diving accident in 1967, Tada’s faith helped her to persevere and become a successful artist using her mouth to paint and draw. The publication of her story in the book “Joni” and in various media outlets led to an outpouring of response from others impacted by disability and in need of encouragement. Tada founded Joni and Friends in 1979 to fulfill this purpose and began the national ...

Special Delivery Makes an Impact

Layla was born recently with Down Syndrome and had to be hospitalized for intestinal problems. Her parents are un-churched and have been grieving the loss of their hopes for their child (they did not know Layla would be born with Down's). When Debra Petermann of our Joni and Friends/Ohio team found out about this little family, she put together a very unusual Special Delivery basket – resources, books, a pretty pink ballerina tutu, tiara and slippers. Debra said, "I can picture little Layla dancing into the hearts of her parents; I'm convinced she's going to bring this couple so much joy in the months to come." How was this gift basket received? The mother absolutely loved it – she even cried! Best of all, the family are considering coming to church once Layla is out of the hospital. Find out more about Special Delivery and how you can get involved!

…Then pray about serving this April as a short-term missionary at our International Family Retreat in Guatemala. Special-needs families in Guatemala often live in extreme poverty, and they need to know the touch of Jesus – perhaps through someone like you! Take Walter, a short-term missionary who served last year at our International Family Retreat in Guatemala. He was assigned to help Enrique, a 71-year-old stroke survivor who had lost his wife. Enrique was very hardened against God. Walter found him difficult to work with (many times Walter had to leave the activities and simply walk Enrique around the campus). But the young man kept extending kindness and patience, and soon, Enrique's stubborn heart began to melt. He finally came to Jesus...
