Very shortly, Joni will be traveling to Cedarville University in Ohio along with Dr. Kathy McReynolds of the Joni and Friends Christian Institute on Disability – both will be presenters at Bioethics Conference 2011 highlighting end-of-life issues and ministry.

“These are difficult times for many elderly people, what with healthcare reform and the euthanasia movement gaining steam,” says Joni. “We as Christians need to get equipped, and I hope many people throughout the Ohio River Valley will sign up for this important conference!”

Joni and Friends/Ohio will also be sponsoring a Through the Roof Summit for people interested in starting or expanding disability ministry in their church. For more information, visit www.cedarville.edu/bioethics2011.

  • Family Retreats, Wheels For The World

A couple of years ago Joni put out a call on Christian radio for more male short-term missionaries to serve at Family Retreats. Although David didn’t know anyone with a disability, he answered the call (married with no children and owner of his own car-rental business, he had the time). After the first Family Retreat, David was hooked (it’s now an annual thing). It didn’t stop there – David started collecting wheelchairs for Wheels for the World, and even provided storage space when our other warehouse no longer became available...

joni being welcomed at the bonclarken family retreatEvery Joni and Friends Family Retreat starts out with a bang as soon as families drive up to the front door of camp. Scores of short-term missionaries line the driveway and front door to the conference center – as soon as the family van stops, our retreat director will greet the family over a bull-horn, with everyone breaking out into cheers and hearty applause. “Welcome,” volunteers will say, “we are so glad you are here!” Then that family’s pre-assigned volunteer will grab the luggage and escort them to their room where balloons and a welcome basket greet them. “Never has our family been treated so royally,” said one mother this summer, “from the very start, the love of Jesus Christ is showered on my disabled child and siblings. It’s amazing!” Three more amazing Family Retreats are scheduled this week in New England, Oregon, and Minnesotapray that the Holy Spirit will visit each camp in a powerful way.

cabi representative and woman in wheelchairHow does God richly bless a Family Retreat? By generous partners who donate their goods and services. Like our friends at CAbi (a clothing company whose reps bring a fashion show of designer clothing to you and your girlfriends in your own home)! Susan Kressler, CAbi rep for Charlotte, NC, brought 15 of her girlfriends to Family Retreat to put on a first-class fashion show during ‘pampering day’ for our special needs moms. The mothers were flabbergasted – after a fun afternoon of trying on different styles and sizes, CAbi, bless their hearts, provided 5 pieces of top-notch designer clothing to each mother or woman with a disability!...
