2011 summer interns serving at murrieta family retreat

What a great group of summer interns we’ve enjoyed this month – these are the faces of the future when it comes to leaders in disability ministry. The first week of internship involved classroom study in our "Beyond Suffering" intensive; the second week, they happily rolled up their sleeves to serve at one of our Joni and Friends’ Family Retreats. These young women were so excited after their two-week internship, they are already planning to sign up for a Cause 4 Life global missions outreach next year. Watch out world! Want to join them? Check out the details at Cause 4 Life

wheels for the world outreach in ghanaOur teams are here, there and everywhere around the world this week, giving the love of Christ to people with disabilities! We just completed an outreach in Mali, West Africa, as well as international Family Retreats in Romania, China and Ukraine – after our Ukrainian outreach, Joni and Friends team members flew straight to Uganda where we are leading sessions on disability ministry at Uganda Christian University and at Gaba Bible Institute. In addition, our Wheels for the World team will be distributing Bibles and wheelchairs to more than 200 disabled children and adults, and giving the Gospel of Christ with every chair. Joni and Friends is also in El Salvador this week. Please pray that hearts will be opened to the salvation message. Would you like to serve with us? Visit our Cause 4 Life internship page for all the details!

Our good friend Hyatt Moore came to the IDC last week to present to us his beautiful new oil painting – those outstretched hands reaching to heaven say at all! The Christian Institute on Disability team asked Hyatt to create a painting which would be fitting for the cover of our new Beyond Suffering curriculum. We feel his concept truly captures the heart of our Beyond Suffering course of study. And the original? It will proudly hang in the IDC General Assembly room where staff and visitors alike will be inspired to lift happy hearts and hands to our Savior for his amazing grace! Post a comment and tell us what you think of Hyatt's artwork!

Because of her own cerebral palsy, this exceptional young woman with the great smile...

This week our Joni and Friends' Christian Institute on Disability is hosting 38 students from the US and around the world for our summer intensive. The study session is called "Beyond Suffering: Christian Perspectives on Disability Ministry." This acclaimed course takes a deeper look into the theology, family and church issues, and current cultural topics relating to disability. "This intensive is just that… Intense," says Joni, "after our students complete this certificate course of study, they will have a clearer perspective on God's strategy to reach the world's 1 billion people with disabilities with...

Justin and his family are ‘regulars’ at our Bonclarken Family Retreats led by our Joni and Friends/Charlotte team – Justin is non-verbal, but is exceptionally charismatic and smiles all the time. But their ministry extends beyond Family Retreats. Justin and his parents were part of our last Wheels for the World trip to the Dominican Republic. Dad came as a physician, and mom showed families how to make communication boards for their disabled children so they could ‘talk’ with them for the first time! And Justin? Well, he was the best ambassador for Christ, encouraging everyone with his smiles and high fives! Drop Justin a line on our blog!

woman in wheelchair making gospel braceletsSome time ago Anna wrote Joni and Friends about the plight of her sister, Christina, living in a nursing home – Christina was depressed and discouraged that she had no “real ministry.” Our coworkers in Correspondence alerted Anna of a Joni and Friends office in her region – we also planted the vision for Christina to make Gospel bracelets for our Wheels for the World outreach teams. Anna wrote, “I am so thankful I reached out to Joni and Friends and you so sweetly responded. Christina has completed her first 100 bracelets… God is so good! We are amazed at the way she has gotten engaged. She watches...
